A Completely New Type of Garden Power Tool

TarranTiller uses patented linear reciprocating blade technology — the blades move straight up and down, not in circles. This is fundamentally different from every other powered hoe or tiller on the market.

The result: a tool that breaks up soil in minutes, works right up to plant stems without damage, doesn't throw soil, and doesn't pull or jerk when it hits roots or stones.

It's lighter than a hedge trimmer in use because the tool's own weight rests on the soil — you simply guide it. Tested by over 50 users from children to pensioners, every single one could use it immediately.

  • Maintain flower beds and borders — the primary use, quicker and easier than any manual method
  • Loosen and remove weeds — roots come out easily once the soil is loosened
  • Cut clean edges into grass borders
  • Prepare ground for lawn repair and reseeding
  • Dig holes for bedding plants in compacted soil
  • Mix compost, peat, or fertiliser into soil
  • Work in tight spaces and around fragile plants with precision

This isn't a specialist tool you use twice a year. It becomes part of your regular gardening routine — grab it alongside your strimmer every few weeks to keep borders looking fresh.

  •  Home gardeners who want neat borders without the back pain
  • Older gardeners and those with mobility issues — no bending, no kicking spades into hard ground
  • Professional landscapers and gardeners covering large areas efficiently
  • Anyone who can use a grass trimmer can use this — it's even lighter in use

  •  Affordable at a price similar to a hedge trimmer, with way more versatility.
  • Not difficult to manufacture.
  • Easy and a pleasure to use – quick easy results.
  • Reach difficult areas with ease.
  • Agile to manoeuvre around obstacles – plants, hard landscaping etc...
  • Soil finish is fine and aesthetically pleasing.
  • Non-destructive to surrounding plants.
  • Doesn’t drive/pull away from user.
  • Use every few weeks to keep beds fresh—no more difficult and constant upkeep.

Why Existing Tools Don't Work

Manual hoeing and digging is slow, exhausting, and hard on the back, knees, and legs. It's the gardening job most people dread — and the one that gets neglected.

Powered alternatives haven't solved the problem. Mini rotavators throw soil everywhere, pull violently when they hit roots, and can't work near plants. Several models have been discontinued because they simply weren't good enough.

The only professional battery-powered hoe on the market costs over £1,500 and is sold exclusively through agricultural dealers.

There is nothing on the consumer market that actually works. Until now.

    The Opportunity

    Patent Status

UK Patent Granted, European Patent Granted (Unitary Patent) US Patent Application: In Prosecution

    The Market

The UK garden retail market is worth approximately £8 billion (HTA, 2023), with the power tools segment valued at around £1.2 billion and growing at 3.5–4.6% annually. 87% of UK households have a garden, and 27 million people garden as a hobby. The over-55 demographic — who spend the most on garden products — is growing and increasingly seeking tools that reduce physical effort.

    User Testing

Over 50 users tested across all ages and abilities, including professional landscapers who used it on commercial jobs over extended periods. The response has been unanimously positive, with reactions including "Game changer," "Why has no one thought of this before?" and "When can I buy one?"

    Product Development

Multiple fully functioning prototypes built and extensively tested. The tool is designed to integrate with existing cordless garden tool battery platforms, using long-reach hedge trimmer donor components. Consumer and professional versions are planned.

    Licensing

TarranTiller is available for licensing to manufacturers with existing battery-powered garden tool platforms. The patented mechanism represents a new product category with no direct consumer competition. A full business case with indicative financials is available on request.
